What is Meningitis B?

Meningococcal meningitis is an acute bacterial infection that can spread rapidly throughout the body and become life-threatening if not treated promptly. There are several serogroups of meningococcal disease, with types B and C being the most commonly seen in the UK.

The infection spreads through sneezing, coughing, and close contact with respiratory secretions. The bacteria can also be carried harmlessly in the nasal passages of healthy individuals. In fact, around 25% of teenagers and 5–11% of adults may carry the bacteria without showing any symptoms.

Main symptoms of Meningitis B

The symptoms of meningitis usually develop suddenly and may include:

  • A high temperature (fever)
  • Vomiting or feeling sick
  • Headache
  • A rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it (although a rash does not always appear)
  • A stiff neck
  • Sensitivity to bright light
  • Drowsiness or reduced responsiveness
  • Seizures (fits)

These symptoms can appear in any order, and not all symptoms may be present. If meningitis is suspected, urgent medical attention should be sought immediately.
