About Beta hCG

A quantitative test, with two ways to have it done.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone produced during pregnancy, rising quickly in the early weeks. Unlike a home urine test, which only gives a positive or negative line, this is a quantitative test, meaning it gives an actual number for the level of hCG in your blood. This number is what allows your pharmacist, or your fertility clinic, to track how the pregnancy is progressing rather than simply confirming that it exists.

This test is also commonly used following IVF treatment. Fertility clinics often ask for a quantitative beta hCG result a set number of days after embryo transfer, using the number, and sometimes a repeat number a few days later, to help confirm how the pregnancy is developing.

Two ways to have this test done are available. Our rapid test uses a small capillary sample, analysed onsite, with a quantitative result explained in around 15 minutes. Our full laboratory test uses a venous blood sample, taken by phlebotomy, sent away to a laboratory, with a result available in 2 to 3 days. If your fertility clinic has specifically asked for a laboratory-processed result, the full laboratory test is usually the right choice, since some clinics require this rather than a point-of-care result.

Useful after an inconclusive home test. If a home pregnancy test has given an unclear or faint result, this test can offer a clearer answer.
A single test confirms pregnancy, not viability. One test on its own can confirm that you are pregnant, but it cannot tell you whether the pregnancy is developing as expected. To check this, it is usually recommended to take two tests, 48 to 72 hours apart. In a typical early pregnancy, the hormone level roughly doubles over this time, and comparing the two numbers shows whether the rate of increase looks as expected.
Who this is for

Is the Beta hCG test right for you?

Confirming early pregnancy

Particularly useful if testing earlier than a home test would reliably detect.

An inconclusive home test result

A blood test can offer a clearer answer than a faint or ambiguous line.

Following IVF treatment

Many fertility clinics ask for a quantitative beta hCG result a set number of days after embryo transfer, to help confirm how the pregnancy is developing.

Wanting extra reassurance

Some people simply prefer the clarity of a blood test alongside a home result.

Monitoring early pregnancy

As advised by your doctor or midwife, where relevant.

Checking the rate of increase

A second test, 48 to 72 hours after the first, can show whether your hormone level is rising as expected.

What to expect

How your Beta hCG test appointment works.

The steps below describe the rapid test. For the full laboratory test, the sample is taken by phlebotomy instead of a fingerprick, and sent away, with your pharmacist calling you once your result is back.

Quick, private discussion

Your pharmacist confirms why you are testing and answers any questions beforehand.

Capillary sample taken

A small fingerprick sample, taken onsite.

Result in around 15 minutes

Your pharmacist explains your result in a private, unhurried conversation, and confirms whether a second test to check the rate of increase would be useful.

Repeat test, if recommended

If checking the rate of increase would be helpful, a second test is taken 48 to 72 hours later, and your pharmacist compares the two results.

Next steps, if needed

Your pharmacist can advise on sensible next steps, including seeing your GP or midwife.

Transparent pricing

Both options give a quantitative result. Choose based on how quickly you need your result, and whether your fertility clinic has specified a laboratory-processed test. Prices are subject to change, please confirm at the clinic before booking.

FAQs

Beta hCG test FAQs.

Does this test give a number, or just a positive or negative result?
This test gives an actual number for the level of hCG in your blood, known as a quantitative result. This is different from a home urine test, which only shows a positive or negative line, and is what allows tracking of how a pregnancy is progressing.
I have had IVF, can I use this test to check my result?
Yes. Many fertility clinics ask for a quantitative beta hCG result a set number of days after embryo transfer, sometimes with a repeat test a few days later. If your clinic has specified a laboratory-processed result, our full laboratory test is usually the right choice, since some clinics do not accept a point-of-care rapid result.
What is the difference between the rapid test and the full laboratory test?
Both give a quantitative result. The rapid test uses a small fingerprick sample, analysed onsite, with your result explained in around 15 minutes. The full laboratory test uses a venous blood sample, taken by phlebotomy, sent away to a laboratory, with a result available in 2 to 3 days. The full laboratory test is generally chosen when a fertility clinic or doctor has specifically requested a laboratory-processed result.
Does one test tell me if my pregnancy is viable?
No. A single test can confirm that you are pregnant, but it cannot tell you whether the pregnancy is developing as expected. To check this, it is usually recommended to take a second test 48 to 72 hours later. In a typical early pregnancy, the hormone level roughly doubles over this time, so comparing the two numbers helps show whether the rate of increase looks as expected. If you have concerns about viability, your pharmacist can also advise on seeing your GP or midwife.
How is this different from a home pregnancy test?
A blood test can detect the pregnancy hormone earlier and more reliably than most home urine tests, and gives a clearer answer if a home test result was faint or inconclusive. It also gives an actual number rather than just a positive or negative line.
How early can this test detect pregnancy?
Blood tests can generally detect pregnancy earlier than home urine tests, though exact timing varies from person to person. Your pharmacist can advise based on your situation.
Is this test confidential?
Yes, your consultation and result are entirely private and confidential.
How much does this test cost?
The rapid test is £50, with your result explained in around 15 minutes. The full laboratory test is £90 in total (£55 test plus £35 phlebotomy), with a result in 2 to 3 days.
What should I do after a positive result?
Your pharmacist can talk through sensible next steps, including registering with a GP or midwife to begin antenatal care.
