Treatment methods

Microsuction or irrigation — which is right for you?

We offer both methods. Your clinician will examine your ears first and recommend the safest, most effective technique for your situation.

Gold standard

Microsuction

A fine, low-pressure suction device removes wax under direct visualisation. No water, no mess. Widely considered the safest and most comfortable method, with immediate results for most patients.

Best for: Most patients, including those with perforated eardrums or previous ear surgery.

Irrigation

Warm water is gently flushed into the ear canal to dislodge and remove softer wax deposits. A well-established, effective technique for suitable candidates.

Best for: Softer wax deposits. Not suitable for perforated eardrums or certain conditions.

Questions answered

Everything you need to know.

How long does the appointment take?
Most appointments take 20–30 minutes from start to finish — including the ear examination, procedure, and post-treatment assessment. Allow up to 45 minutes if both ears require treatment.
Is microsuction painful?
Microsuction is generally well-tolerated and most patients find it comfortable. You may notice a sound sensation during the procedure. Some patients feel a brief moment of mild discomfort if wax is firmly impacted, but it should not be painful. Your clinician will pause if you feel any discomfort.
Do I need to use olive oil drops beforehand?
Olive oil drops for 3–5 days before your appointment can soften wax and make removal easier, but they are not always necessary. If your appointment is same-day, do not worry about not having used drops — your clinician will assess and proceed accordingly. Please avoid cotton buds, which can push wax deeper.
What is the difference between microsuction and irrigation?
Microsuction uses a fine suction device under direct visualisation to remove wax — no water involved, making it safe for virtually all patients including those with perforated eardrums. Irrigation uses a gentle flow of warm water to flush out softer wax. Both are effective; your clinician will recommend the most appropriate method after examining your ears.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly without a GP referral. Simply book online or contact us via WhatsApp or phone. This is a fully private, fee-paying service.
Is the treatment safe?
Yes. Microsuction is widely regarded as the gold standard for earwax removal and is performed under direct visualisation throughout. All treatments at Veritas are performed by trained clinicians in a GPhC-registered clinical environment. A thorough ear examination is always performed before any treatment begins.
What if my wax is severely impacted?
Severely impacted wax can sometimes require softening before it can be safely removed. In some cases, your clinician may recommend a short course of olive oil drops and ask you to return for a follow-up. This is not common and will always be explained clearly at the time of your examination.
Can I drive afterwards?
Yes. Earwax removal does not affect your ability to drive. Most patients feel immediate improvement and leave with noticeably clearer hearing. In the rare case of mild dizziness, your clinician will advise you before you leave.
Is this an NHS service?
No. This is a private, fee-paying service. Earwax removal was removed from routine NHS provision in many areas. We are GPhC-registered and offer the same standard of clinical care at a transparent private fee — without the wait.
