New Medicine Service.
Support when it matters most.

Free NHS service providing structured support when you start a new long-term medicine. Three consultations with our pharmacist to help you get the most from your treatment.

About the service

Support when starting a new long-term medicine.

The New Medicine Service (NMS) is an NHS-funded programme available at registered pharmacies. It provides structured consultations with a pharmacist when you are prescribed a new medicine for a long-term condition — helping you understand your medication, manage any side effects, and build confidence in taking it correctly.

Research shows patients who receive the NMS are significantly more likely to continue taking their medicine as prescribed, leading to better long-term health outcomes. The service is completely free.

Who is eligible? Patients recently prescribed a new medicine for asthma or COPD, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, anticoagulation (warfarin, NOACs), or antiplatelet therapy. The new prescription must have been dispensed within the past four weeks.

What to expect

The three consultations.

First consultation (1–2 weeks after starting the medicine)

Your pharmacist discusses how to take the medicine correctly, what to expect in the first weeks, common side effects, and any concerns you have.

Follow-up (2–4 weeks after first consultation)

A telephone or face-to-face check-in to review how you are getting on. Any problems with adherence, side effects, or concerns are addressed.

Final consultation (3–4 weeks after follow-up)

A review of your progress. Your pharmacist confirms you are taking the medicine as prescribed and feeling confident about continuing. Any outstanding issues are escalated to your GP if needed.
