About Pharmacy First

Direct NHS care with no GP appointment needed.

Pharmacy First is an NHS England scheme allowing pharmacists to assess and treat six common conditions directly — without the patient needing to contact their GP first. Your pharmacist can give clinical advice and supply treatment where appropriate, all in a single visit.

The service is free to any patient registered with an NHS GP in England. You do not need to be registered with a Sunderland GP.

Who is eligible? Any patient registered with an NHS GP in England. Bring your GP’s name and surgery address if possible, but it is not essential.

FAQs

Pharmacy First questions.

Is Pharmacy First really free?
Yes. It is an NHS-funded service. No charge for the consultation or for any medicine supplied under the scheme, provided you are registered with an NHS GP in England.
Do I need to bring anything?
Bring your NHS number if you have it, and your GP surgery name and address. Neither is essential — your name and date of birth are sufficient. If you take regular medicines, bring a list.
What if my condition isn’t one of the six?
Book online or call us and we will assess. If Pharmacy First doesn’t apply, our pharmacist will advise on private consultation, GP referral, urgent care, or appropriate self-care. You will never leave without guidance.
Can children use Pharmacy First?
Yes — most conditions are covered for all ages. The UTI pathway applies to women aged 16–64 only. Under-18s should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
