Most insect bites and stings settle on their own within a few days, but sometimes the skin around a bite becomes genuinely infected and needs treatment. Through the National Health Service Pharmacy First scheme, our pharmacist can assess and treat an infected insect bite by remote video consultation, at no cost to you, with a secure video link emailed to you around 10 minutes before your appointment.

Is it infected, or just a normal reaction to a bite?

It is common for a bite or sting to become red, swollen, and itchy in the hours after it happens. This is usually a normal inflammatory or allergic reaction, not an infection, and it typically settles within a few days without needing antibiotics.

A genuine infection is more likely if the redness and swelling continue to spread over several days, particularly with increasing pain, increasing warmth around the area, or the appearance of pus. Your pharmacist will ask about how the area has changed over time, which helps tell these two possibilities apart.

Who can be treated for an infected insect bite through this service?

This service is available to anyone aged 1 and over. Infected insect bites are assessed and treated entirely through our remote video consultation, so you can be seen from wherever you are.

When to seek help elsewhere. Rapidly spreading redness, a high fever, feeling generally very unwell, or a bite from a tick, particularly if you notice an expanding red rash around the bite site, are not assessed through this service. Tick bites carry a small risk of Lyme disease, and this needs specific assessment. Please contact your general practitioner or the National Health Service urgent number promptly in these situations.

What to expect at your appointment

Your pharmacist asks about the bite itself, including what caused it if known, how the area has changed since it happened, and whether you have any signs of feeling unwell more generally. This helps confirm whether what you are seeing is a genuine infection or a normal reaction that will settle by itself.

Where infection is confirmed, treatment usually involves either a topical or oral antibiotic, depending on how localised or widespread the infection appears to be. Where the bite is simply reacting normally rather than infected, your pharmacist will explain what to expect and how to manage symptoms such as itching in the meantime.
