What is TB, and why get tested?
Tuberculosis, usually called TB, is an infection caused by bacteria that most often affects the lungs. Most people who come into contact with TB never become unwell from it. Instead, the bacteria can lie inactive in the body for years, a state known as latent TB. Screening checks for this inactive infection long before it could ever cause symptoms.
People often need TB screening for practical reasons rather than because they feel unwell: starting a new job in healthcare or social care, enrolling on a university or nursing course, applying for a UK visa, or preparing to travel or work somewhere TB is more common. I need a TB test for work, a course, or a visa
The TB IGRA blood test is usually the fastest option, needing only one visit for the sample. Check your paperwork first, as some employers or institutions ask for a specific test by name.

Some occupational health and visa requirements name the Mantoux skin test specifically. It needs two visits a few days apart so the result can be read in person.
Mantoux skin test →I need the BCG vaccine for work or travel
The BCG is a live vaccine, so the Mantoux skin test is usually needed first, unless you already have a clear BCG scar or documented vaccination history. Your pharmacist reviews your result before confirming you’re suitable for the vaccine.

TB IGRA blood test

A small injection under the skin of the forearm, checked at a second appointment two to three days later. Sometimes required by name.
BCG vaccine
A single injection offering added protection against severe TB for those at higher risk. Usually requires the Mantoux test first, reviewed by your pharmacist before booking.

Book a screening test
Most people start with either the TB IGRA blood test or the Mantoux skin test, depending on what your employer, course, or visa paperwork asks for. If you’re heading towards the BCG vaccine, the Mantoux test is usually the appropriate starting point.
Get your result
Blood test results are usually ready within a few days. Mantoux results are read in person two to three days after the injection.
BCG vaccine, if needed
A clear screening result does not automatically mean the vaccine goes ahead. Your pharmacist reviews your result and confirms whether BCG is appropriate before it’s booked as a separate appointment.
Documentation
Your pharmacist can provide written confirmation of your result or vaccination for your employer, institution, or visa application where needed.
