Free NHS route for UTI symptoms

Women aged 16 to 64 with uncomplicated UTI symptoms may be eligible for the free NHS Pharmacy First service — clinical assessment and treatment at no charge, with no urine sample required to get started. This is worth checking first if your symptoms fit this pattern, before considering a private consultation.

Blood in urine needs prompt attention. Any visible or suspected blood in urine is assessed and, where appropriate, an urgent referral arranged. This symptom in particular should not be left to resolve on its own.

Beyond UTIs: what else gets assessed

A private urinary health consultation covers a broader range of concerns than the free UTI pathway alone, and is available to all patients regardless of age, gender, or NHS eligibility. This includes diabetes-related symptoms such as increased thirst or urination, kidney function concerns like protein loss or reduced output, and general urinary frequency, urgency, or discomfort without a clear cause. Depending on findings, this may lead to a laboratory urine culture, blood tests, or referral to a GP for further investigation.
