About earwax removal

When earwax becomes a problem.

Earwax is normal and protective. However, when it builds up or becomes impacted it can cause muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness, tinnitus, earache, or dizziness. Over-the-counter drops alone are often insufficient for impacted wax — professional removal gives immediate, lasting relief.

Microsuction

Recommended

A fine, gentle suction probe removes wax under direct visualisation. No water used. The safest and most effective method for most patients, including those with perforated eardrums.

  • No water usedSafe for perforated eardrums and ear grommets.
  • No softening drops neededCome straight in without preparation — though drops for 3 days beforehand help with stubborn wax.
  • Immediate resultMost patients notice improved hearing immediately after the procedure.

Irrigation

Warm water is gently flushed into the ear canal to dislodge and flush out softened wax. Effective for softer wax. Our clinician will assess which method is appropriate at your appointment.

  • Best for softer waxWorks well when wax has been softened for 3–5 days using olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops.
  • Not suitable for allContraindicated with perforated eardrums, previous ear surgery, or active ear infection.
  • Clinician-assessedOur clinician checks your ears before deciding which method is safest and most effective for you.

What to expect

What happens at your appointment.

Optional: soften for 3–5 days before

For best results with harder wax, use olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops twice daily for 3–5 days before your appointment. This is optional — microsuction often works without preparation.

Ear examination

Your clinician examines both ear canals with an otoscope. This confirms wax is present, assesses the eardrum, and determines which removal method is most appropriate.

Wax removed

The chosen method is applied — microsuction (fine suction probe) or irrigation (warm water flush). Most patients find the procedure comfortable. Both ears are treated if needed.

Post-procedure check and aftercare

Your clinician checks the ear canals again after removal and gives brief aftercare advice. Most patients notice improved hearing immediately. The appointment takes around 30 minutes total.

Common questions

Earwax removal FAQs.

Which method should I choose — microsuction or irrigation?
You don’t need to decide. Book Earwax Removal and our clinician will examine your ears at the appointment and recommend the safest, most effective method for your situation. Microsuction is suitable for more patients and requires no preparation, but both options are available.
Do I need to use ear drops before my appointment?
It is helpful but not essential. If you have time before your appointment, using olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops twice daily for 3–5 days softens the wax and often improves results. If you need same-day treatment, come in without drops — microsuction can usually handle unprepped wax.
Is earwax removal painful?
Neither method is painful for most patients. Microsuction may produce a brief loud noise and mild pressure sensation. Irrigation involves warm water and a slight fullness feeling. If at any point you experience discomfort, the procedure is stopped immediately. Most patients find both methods entirely comfortable.
What if my ears are not fully unblocked at the appointment?
Occasionally, very hard or deeply impacted wax cannot be removed in a single session. If this happens, your clinician will advise a short course of softening drops and a follow-up appointment. Stubborn cases are uncommon — most presentations are resolved in one visit.
How much does earwax removal cost?
From £50 per ear. Both ears can be treated in the same appointment. The price covers your full appointment — ear examination, procedure, and aftercare advice. No hidden charges. Price confirmed at booking.
