About this service

Why get your blood pressure checked?

High blood pressure (hypertension) affects around 1 in 3 adults in the UK and usually has no symptoms. Left untreated, it significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease.

A blood pressure check at Veritas takes around 15 minutes. Our pharmacist takes an accurate reading, interprets the result, and gives you clear clinical advice — including when to see a GP if your reading is elevated.

Who should get checked? Adults over 40 are recommended to check every 5 years. If you are overweight, smoke, have a family history of hypertension, or feel dizzy or breathless, get checked sooner regardless of age.

What to expect

What happens at your appointment.

Book your appointment

Book online via Halaxy or call us on 0191 503 4053. Same-day slots are available most days. No preparation or fasting is required.

Brief health questions

Our pharmacist will ask a few short questions about your medical history, current medications, and any relevant symptoms. This takes 2–3 minutes.

Measurement taken

A blood pressure cuff is placed around your upper arm and inflated briefly. The reading takes under a minute. A second measurement may be taken for accuracy.

Result and next steps

Your pharmacist explains your result — what the numbers mean, whether it is in the normal range, and what to do next. If your reading is high, you’ll receive a referral letter for your GP.

Common questions

Blood pressure check FAQs.

Do I need to prepare before my appointment?
No special preparation is needed. Avoid caffeine, smoking, and strenuous exercise for 30 minutes beforehand if possible. Wear a short-sleeved top or something easy to roll up. Arrive a few minutes early to sit quietly before the measurement.
What do the numbers mean?
Blood pressure is measured in two numbers — systolic (the pressure when your heart beats) over diastolic (pressure between beats). A normal reading is below 120/80 mmHg. Your pharmacist will explain exactly what your result means and whether any action is needed.
What happens if my blood pressure is high?
If your reading is elevated, your pharmacist will recommend a follow-up with your GP and may suggest taking a second reading after a short rest. You will receive a written summary of your reading to take to your GP. High blood pressure is very treatable when caught early.
How often should I have my blood pressure checked?
Adults 40+ are recommended to check at least every 5 years. If you already have elevated readings or are on blood pressure medication, annual checks are advised. If you are monitoring treatment response, your pharmacist or GP will advise a more frequent schedule.
How will I receive my results?
Results are sent directly to you via secure email from the laboratory, following verification by a clinician. Your pharmacist will also discuss your reading and next steps with you at the appointment.
