Oral contraception
without a GP appointment.

Free NHS contraception service. Our GPhC-registered pharmacist can supply oral contraception directly — no GP referral, no waiting. Confidential consultation at 113 Chester Road.

About the service

Contraception directly from your pharmacist.

The NHS oral contraception service allows our GPhC-registered pharmacist to supply the oral contraceptive pill directly, without you needing to see a GP first. This reduces waiting times and makes contraception more accessible for patients across Sunderland and nationally.

The consultation is completely confidential. Our pharmacist will take a brief health history and blood pressure measurement to confirm which oral contraceptive options are safe and appropriate for you.

Who is eligible? Women registered with an NHS GP in England. You do not need to be registered with a Sunderland GP. The service covers combined oral contraceptives and the progestogen-only pill (POP/mini-pill).
Emergency contraception? If you need emergency contraception, see our Emergency Contraception page — call us now or book immediately. Do not wait.

FAQs

Contraception service FAQs.

Which contraceptives are available through this service?
The NHS pharmacy contraception service covers oral contraceptives — the combined pill (oestrogen and progestogen) and the progestogen-only pill (mini-pill). Long-acting reversible contraceptives (coil, implant, injection) are not available through this service and require a GP or sexual health clinic.
Is this service completely confidential?
Yes. Your consultation and health information are confidential. With your consent, a summary may be shared with your registered GP to maintain your medical record — you can opt out of this.
What if I have not taken the pill before?
Our pharmacist will take a careful health history and blood pressure measurement before recommending a contraceptive. First-time users will receive full instructions and information about what to expect. Starting instructions (which day to begin, when protection starts) will be clearly explained.
Can I get repeat supplies from Veritas?
Yes. Once your suitability has been confirmed at an initial consultation, repeat supplies can be arranged. Call us or book a short follow-up appointment.
