About flu vaccination

A private service, not an NHS flu provider.

Flu can be far more than a bad cold, for some people it leads to serious complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia, and can worsen existing health conditions. Because flu strains change and protection reduces over time, a new vaccine is needed each year, even if you were vaccinated last winter.

The NHS offers this vaccine free each autumn and winter to specific groups, including people aged 65 and over, pregnant women, those with certain long-term health conditions, carers, and health and social care workers, through GP practices and participating pharmacies. Veritas Pharmacy does not deliver the NHS flu programme, so we cannot offer it free of charge, even to people who would otherwise be eligible elsewhere. What we offer is a private, paid flu vaccination service, available to anyone who would like the convenience of booking directly with us.

If you are NHS eligible, you can have this vaccine free elsewhere. Your GP practice or a participating pharmacy can provide it at no cost if you fall within a current eligible group. Booking with us means paying privately, whatever your eligibility.
Egg-free options are available. Some flu vaccines contain egg protein and others do not, so let your pharmacist know if you have an egg allergy.
Who should consider it

Is the flu vaccine right for you?

Anyone wanting a private appointment

Whether or not you are NHS eligible elsewhere, our flu vaccination is a private, paid service, chosen for its convenience and same-day availability.

Those working in customer-facing or shared workplaces

Where reducing time off sick and exposure to colleagues matters.

Household contacts of vulnerable people

Reducing your own risk of catching flu also reduces the chance of passing it on at home.

Frequent travellers

Flu circulates at different times in different parts of the world, so protection can be worthwhile beyond the UK winter season too.

If you are NHS eligible and want it free

Your GP practice or a participating pharmacy can offer this vaccine at no cost, we are not able to provide the NHS route here.

What to expect

How your flu vaccination appointment works.

Quick health check

Your pharmacist confirms the vaccine is suitable for you, including checking for any egg allergy or previous reactions.

Single injection

One dose, given into the upper arm, that is it for the season.

Protection develops within about 2 weeks

Booking earlier in the autumn gives the best head start before flu begins circulating widely.

A new vaccine each year

Because flu strains change and protection fades, this is repeated annually rather than being a one-off vaccination.

FAQs

Flu vaccine FAQs.

Do you offer the free NHS flu vaccine?
No. Veritas Pharmacy does not deliver the NHS flu vaccination programme, so we can only offer this vaccine as a private, paid service, even if you would otherwise be eligible for it free elsewhere. If you qualify for the NHS vaccine, your GP practice or a participating pharmacy can provide it at no cost.
Why do I need a new flu vaccine every year?
Flu strains change from year to year, and protection from a previous vaccine reduces over time. The vaccine is updated annually to match the strains most likely to circulate that season.
How many doses do I need?
Adults need a single dose each flu season.
I have an egg allergy, can I still have this vaccine?
Some flu vaccines contain egg protein and others do not. Let your pharmacist know about any egg allergy so the right option can be used.
When is the best time to have it?
Ideally in autumn, before flu starts circulating widely, though vaccination later in the season still offers worthwhile protection.
Are there any side effects?
Most side effects are mild, such as soreness at the injection site, or feeling slightly under the weather for a day or two. Your pharmacist will discuss any individual risks with you before vaccination.
