Dengue is a mosquito-borne illness found across tropical and subtropical regions. Current UK guidance recommends this vaccine specifically for people who have had a confirmed dengue infection in the past and remain at risk, rather than as a general recommendation for any traveller heading somewhere dengue is present. Who this vaccine is currently recommended for in the UK.
Dengue is a viral infection spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes, common across Asia, Africa, Central and South America, the Caribbean, the Pacific Islands, and parts of southern Europe. Most infections cause a flu-like illness, but a second infection with a different dengue strain can sometimes be more severe than the first.
Because of this, and because the UK population rarely encounters dengue, current UK guidance takes a cautious approach. The vaccine is recommended for people aged 4 and over who have had a confirmed dengue infection in the past and are travelling again to an area with dengue risk, or who face occupational exposure, for example laboratory staff working with the virus. It is not currently recommended for people who have never had dengue, as there is a theoretical risk that vaccinating someone with no prior exposure could make a first natural infection with certain dengue strains more severe rather than less. This is assessed carefully at your consultation.

For example laboratory staff who work directly with the dengue virus.
Particularly those who have spent significant time in, or grew up in, a dengue-endemic area and are likely to have been infected previously.
Even for high-risk destinations, current UK guidance does not recommend this vaccine for people with no prior dengue infection. Bite avoidance is the main protection in this situation.

How the dengue vaccine consultation and course work.
Eligibility discussion first
Your pharmacist talks through your travel and medical history to establish whether this vaccine is appropriate for you, based on current UK guidance.
First dose
If suitable, the first dose can be given from as little as 14 days before travel, though earlier is preferable.
Second dose, 3 months later
A minimum 3-month gap is needed for the durability of protection. This shouldn’t be shortened, though if delayed it doesn’t need to be restarted, just completed when next possible.
Long-term protection still being studied
This is a newer vaccine, so a booster schedule hasn’t yet been established. Guidance will be updated as more long-term data becomes available.
