Rapid ferritin blood test
(iron levels).
Ferritin reflects how much iron your body has stored, and is one of the most useful tests for getting to the bottom of ongoing tiredness. A simple finger-prick sample, analysed onsite, with your result ready in around 15 minutes.
Your body’s iron stores, not just the iron in your blood.
Ferritin is a protein that stores iron, so measuring it gives a good indication of your body’s overall iron reserves, rather than just how much iron is circulating at that moment. Low ferritin is one of the most common causes of tiredness, particularly in women of menstruating age, vegetarians and vegans, and those with a generally low-iron diet. It is often an early sign of developing iron deficiency, sometimes before anaemia itself shows up on a standard blood count.
Ferritin can also rise for reasons unrelated to iron, since it increases naturally during infection, inflammation, or certain liver conditions. Because of this, your pharmacist will consider your result alongside your symptoms and history, rather than in isolation.
