One of the most common and useful blood tests, giving a snapshot of your red cells, white cells, haemoglobin and platelets. Often the first test used to investigate tiredness, unexplained bruising, or suspected infection.
A broad first look at your blood.
A full blood count measures the different cells that make up your blood: red cells (which carry oxygen), white cells (which fight infection), and platelets (which help your blood clot), along with your haemoglobin level. It is one of the most frequently requested blood tests, since it can point towards a wide range of conditions.
A low haemoglobin or red cell count can suggest anaemia, a raised white cell count can suggest infection or inflammation, and abnormal platelet levels can affect clotting. Your pharmacist will interpret your result alongside your symptoms.
Red cells: haemoglobin, red cell count, haematocrit, mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell haemoglobin (MCH), mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), red cell distribution width (RDW).
White cells: white cell count, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils.
Platelets: platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV).
