Why some jobs need hepatitis B vaccination.

Hepatitis B is a virus that spreads through blood and bodily fluids. Certain roles carry a genuine occupational risk of exposure, for example through needle-stick injuries, contact with blood-contaminated equipment, or close skin-piercing work. Under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, employers have a duty to protect staff from this kind of biological hazard, and hepatitis B vaccination is one of the standard ways this is managed.

The vaccine itself is the same one used for travel purposes, an inactivated vaccine given as an injection into the upper arm. What differs for occupational use is the paperwork many employers require afterwards: a blood test to confirm your body has responded to the vaccine, and a record you can provide as evidence of your immune status.

Start the course as early as possible if a start date is approaching. The standard schedule takes 6 months to complete, though an accelerated schedule can provide full immunity sooner if your employer needs confirmation quickly.
Antibody testing is available after your course. Many employers request this as proof of immunity, particularly in healthcare, laboratory and similar roles.

How the occupational course works.

Standard schedule, 3 doses

Given at 0, 1 and 6 months. This is the usual approach where there is no immediate deadline for your employer.

Accelerated schedule, if needed sooner

Given at 0, 1, 2 and 12 months, where the final dose at 12 months completes the primary course rather than acting as a separate booster.

Antibody titre test, 1–2 months after your final dose

A blood test confirms whether you have mounted a good immune response. This is the evidence most employers ask for.

Your vaccination and antibody results are kept on file in your Halaxy account, and can be provided as evidence of your immune status.

Why do some jobs require the hepatitis B vaccine?

How many doses do I need?
The standard course is 3 doses given at 0, 1 and 6 months. An accelerated schedule of 0, 1, 2 and 12 months is available if your employer needs confirmation of immunity sooner, with the 12-month dose completing the primary course.
Do I need a blood test afterwards?
Many employers, particularly in healthcare, laboratory and similar settings, ask for an antibody titre test 1 to 2 months after your final dose. This confirms you have mounted an adequate immune response and gives you evidence to provide to your employer. The test is £49.00, plus a separate £35.00 phlebotomy charge for taking the blood sample.
What happens if my antibody test result is low?
A small number of people do not respond fully to the primary course. If your antibody level comes back low, your pharmacist can advise on next steps, which may include a repeat course or further testing, in line with national guidance.
Who pays for the vaccine?
Where a workplace risk assessment identifies a genuine occupational exposure risk, employers are generally expected to cover the cost under UK health and safety regulations. Ask us about invoicing your employer directly.
Is this the same vaccine used for travel?

Are there any side effects?
Side effects are uncommon and usually mild, such as soreness or redness at the injection site. Occasionally, a mild, short-lived fever or flu-like feeling can occur. Your pharmacist will discuss any individual risks with you before vaccination.
