A blood test is a simple and safe way for a clinician to look at a small sample of your blood. This helps them understand how your body is working. If you have a blood test booked, this guide will walk you through everything, step by step, so you know exactly what to expect.
What is a blood test?
A blood test is when a trained clinician takes a very small amount of blood, usually from your arm. The sample is then looked at closely to learn more about your health. It is quick and very common. Most people feel little more than a small pinch.
Before your appointment
Getting ready for your blood test is easy. Follow these simple steps.
- Check if you need to fast. Some blood tests ask you not to eat or drink anything except water for a number of hours beforehand. If this applies to you, our team will tell you when you book.
- Drink plenty of water. Drinking water makes your veins easier to find, so your blood test may feel easier too.
- Wear comfortable clothing. A top with sleeves that roll up easily makes things quicker and simpler.
- Bring identification. Please bring identification with a photo on it, such as a passport or a driving licence.
- Tell us about any medicines you take. Let the clinician know about anything you are taking, including any vitamins or supplements.
- Try to stay calm. If you feel nervous, that is completely normal. You can tell the clinician, and they will help you feel more at ease.
What happens during your blood test
When you arrive, a trained clinician will welcome you and check a few simple details with you. They will then clean a small area of your arm and gently place a thin needle into a vein. This usually takes less than a minute, and most people say it feels like a quick, small pinch. A small sample of blood is collected into a tube, and then a soft plaster or dressing is placed over the area.
After your blood test
Looking after yourself afterwards is simple.
- Keep the plaster on for a few hours
- Rest your arm gently
- Drink some water
- Eat something if you have been fasting
- Avoid heavy lifting with that arm for the rest of the day
A small amount of bruising is normal and usually fades within a few days. If you notice a lot of swelling, ongoing pain, or you feel unwell, please contact us or speak to your general practitioner.
