What this panel measures, and why.

This panel measures testosterone, TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), LH (luteinising hormone), and oestradiol (E2). Together, these give an indication of where you may be in the menopause transition, alongside your symptoms, since hormone levels alone do not tell the whole story. TSH is included because thyroid symptoms often overlap closely with menopause symptoms, and it helps rule out a thyroid cause for what you are experiencing.

Menopause is ultimately a clinical diagnosis, based mainly on your age and symptoms, particularly changes to your periods. Blood tests are most useful for women under 45 with symptoms, for those whose periods have stopped for other reasons, or where the picture is otherwise unclear. Your pharmacist will help place your result in the context of your symptoms.

Hormone levels can fluctuate during perimenopause. A single normal result does not rule out perimenopause, since levels can vary significantly from day to day during this transition. Your symptoms remain central to the overall picture.

Can this panel diagnose menopause on its own?
Not entirely. Menopause is mainly a clinical diagnosis, based on age and symptoms, particularly changes to periods. Blood tests are most useful alongside your symptoms, not as a standalone diagnosis, and are especially helpful for women under 45 or where the picture is unclear.
Why does a menopause panel include testosterone?
Testosterone levels can also decline around menopause, and low testosterone can contribute to symptoms such as low libido and low energy. Including it alongside the other markers gives a fuller picture of what might be contributing to your symptoms.
Do I need to fast before this test?
No, fasting is not required for this panel.
Does the timing in my cycle matter?
It can, particularly for FSH and oestradiol, if you are still having periods. Your pharmacist can advise on the best timing based on your cycle when you book.
What if my result is normal but my symptoms continue?
Hormone levels can fluctuate significantly during perimenopause, so a single normal result does not rule it out. Your pharmacist will consider your symptoms alongside your result and advise on next steps.
Can this help with an HRT conversation?
