Pneumococcal vaccine.

The pneumococcal vaccine protects against a bacterium that can cause pneumonia, bacterial meningitis, and blood infections. The NHS offers it to those aged 65 and over and specific clinical risk groups. If you’re outside those groups but still want protection, whether for general peace of mind, smoking, or occupational exposure, it’s available privately. Why the NHS programme is age and risk-based.

Pneumococcal bacteria spread through respiratory droplets and close contact, and can cause pneumonia, bacterial meningitis, blood infections, and severe ear infections. The vaccine used for adults protects against a broad range of strains of the bacterium responsible.

The NHS routinely offers this vaccine to everyone aged 65 and over, and to people aged 2 to 64 with certain long-term health conditions that increase their risk. Outside these groups, for example healthy adults under 65, smokers, or those with specific occupational exposure such as regular contact with metal fumes, private vaccination is available.

Check your NHS eligibility first. If a long-term health condition puts you at increased risk, you may be able to have this vaccine free through your GP practice at any age. Our private service is for anyone outside that eligibility.
This is a non-live vaccine. It doesn’t contain any live bacteria, and can usually be given alongside other vaccines such as the annual flu jab.

Am I eligible for this vaccine free on the NHS?
It depends on your age and health. The NHS offers it free to everyone aged 65 and over, and to those aged 2 to 64 with certain long-term health conditions. If you’re outside these groups, private vaccination is available.
Does this protect against all types of pneumonia?
No. Pneumonia can be caused by viruses or other bacteria too, but this vaccine is highly effective against the pneumococcal bacterium responsible for some of the most serious cases, including those requiring hospitalisation.
How many doses do I need?
