The Mantoux test involves injecting a small amount of purified protein (tuberculin) into the skin of your forearm. If your immune system has previously encountered TB bacteria, a firm, raised area develops at the injection site over the following days. This is measured at a follow-up appointment, usually 2 to 3 days later, to determine your result.
A previous BCG vaccination can sometimes cause a false positive reaction on this test, since the immune system may respond to the tuberculin similarly to how it would respond to a genuine infection. If you’ve previously had the BCG vaccine, the TB blood test (IGRA) is generally a more reliable option, since it isn’t affected by prior vaccination.
Is this test right for you?
Many universities, particularly for medical, nursing and other clinical courses, require evidence of TB status before starting.
Commonly required for healthcare, laboratory and other roles with a recognised TB exposure risk.
If your deadline allows a few extra days, this is a lower-cost option than the TB blood test.
A negative result here is generally required before BCG vaccination, unless you already have a clear BCG scar or documented vaccination history.
This test works well for anyone without a prior BCG vaccination, since there’s no risk of a vaccine-related false positive.

How the test works.
First appointment: the injection
A small amount of tuberculin is injected just under the skin of your forearm. This takes only a few minutes.
Wait 2 to 3 days
Avoid covering or scratching the area. Any reaction develops gradually over this time.
Second appointment: the reading
Your pharmacist measures any firm, raised area at the injection site to determine your result. In some cases, this can be done from a clear photograph instead.
Certificate provided
Your result is provided in a format suitable for occupational health, university or placement requirements, with the date and reading clearly recorded.
