If you need protection against both hepatitis A and hepatitis B for the same trip, the combined vaccine covers both in a single course, rather than two separate sets of injections. Hepatitis A spreads through contaminated food and water, while hepatitis B spreads through blood and bodily fluids. Available with our GPhC-registered pharmacist, no GP referral needed.
Two viruses, one course of injections.
Hepatitis A and hepatitis B are different viruses that both affect the liver, but they spread in different ways. Hepatitis A is caught mainly through contaminated food and water, and is common in countries with poorer sanitation. Hepatitis B is spread through blood and bodily fluids, including unprotected sex, contaminated needles, and unsterile medical, dental or tattoo equipment. If your trip carries a meaningful risk of both, having them together in one course means fewer separate appointments than having each vaccine on its own schedule.
The combined vaccine is an inactivated vaccine, given as an injection into the upper arm. It does not contain a live virus. Our pharmacist will review your health history and travel plans to confirm whether the combined course, or the two vaccines separately, is the better fit for your situation.
Is the combined vaccine right for you?
If your destination and activities carry risk for both hepatitis A and B, one combined course means fewer appointments than two separate schedules.
Those spending extended time in higher-risk regions, or returning repeatedly for work or family visits.
Where sterile equipment cannot always be guaranteed, alongside general food and water hygiene risk.
Occupational exposure to both viruses can make combined protection a practical choice.
Where only hepatitis A or only hepatitis B protection is needed, the single vaccine is usually the simpler option. Your pharmacist will advise which applies to you.

How the combined vaccine course works.
Standard schedule, 3 doses
Given at 0, 1 and 6 months. This is the preferred option if your travel date allows enough time, and gives the strongest, most durable protection against both viruses.
Accelerated schedule, if travelling sooner
Three doses can be given over about 3 weeks, followed by a booster at 12 months, for travellers who need faster protection.
Two doses covers hepatitis A sooner
Full hepatitis A protection needs two doses of the combined vaccine, so where possible these are prioritised early in the schedule ahead of travel.
Long-term protection
Once the full course is completed, protection against hepatitis A is generally expected to last decades, and protection against hepatitis B is generally long-lasting for most healthy adults.
