Hepatitis A is a liver infection caught mainly through contaminated food and water, and it is one of the most common vaccine-preventable illnesses among travellers. One injection protects most people for around a year, and a booster dose extends this to decades. Available as a walk-in appointment with our GPhC-registered pharmacist, no GP referral needed.
What hepatitis A is, and how the vaccine helps.
Hepatitis A is a highly infectious virus that inflames the liver. It usually spreads through food or water that has been contaminated, or through close contact with someone who is infected. It is more common in countries with poorer sanitation, including much of the Indian subcontinent, Sub-Saharan and North Africa, parts of South East Asia, Central and South America, and the Middle East. In children, symptoms are often mild or absent, but the illness tends to be more serious in adults and can include fever, tiredness, nausea and jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and eyes.
The hepatitis A vaccine is an inactivated vaccine, meaning it does not contain a live virus. It is given as a single injection into the upper arm. Our pharmacist will confirm during your consultation whether the vaccine is suitable for you, based on your health history and travel plans.
Is the hepatitis A vaccine right for you?
Including the Indian subcontinent, Sub-Saharan and North Africa, South East Asia, Central and South America, and the Middle East.
Those staying with local communities, or in areas where food and water hygiene may be less predictable.
Existing liver conditions can make hepatitis A infection more serious, so vaccination is often recommended regardless of destination.
Frequent travellers, aid workers and those with ongoing occupational exposure may benefit from completing the full two-dose course.
A combined hepatitis A and B vaccine is available where protection against both is needed. Ask your pharmacist which option suits your trip.

How the hepatitis A vaccine course works.
First dose
A single injection, ideally given at least 2 to 4 weeks before you travel, so your body has time to build protection.
Around one year of protection
The first dose alone protects most people for approximately 1 year, which is usually enough for a single trip.
Booster dose, 6 to 12 months later
A second injection extends protection considerably, generally expected to last at least 20 to 25 years, and possibly for life in many people.
Record kept for future travel
Your vaccination record is stored in your Halaxy account, so future boosters or combined vaccines can be planned with your history to hand.
