About meningitis ACWY

What the vaccine protects against, and who needs it.

Meningococcal disease is a bacterial infection spread through close contact and respiratory droplets. It can cause meningitis, an infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord, and septicaemia, a serious blood infection. The ACWY vaccine protects against four of the strains responsible, groups A, C, W and Y. Crowded conditions, such as those found during mass gatherings, increase the risk of spread.

For pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah, this vaccine is a compulsory entry requirement, not just a personal protection recommendation. A valid certificate showing the vaccine was given at least 10 days before arrival must be presented at the border. The vaccine is also commonly recommended for travel to parts of Sub-Saharan Africa’s meningitis belt, particularly during the dry season from December to June.

Saudi Arabia requires proof of vaccination at least 10 days before arrival. The conjugate ACWY vaccine we provide is valid for up to 5 years for entry purposes. Leaving this too close to travel risks being refused entry.
A vaccination certificate is provided. This records the vaccine name, type and date given, in the format expected at Saudi border checks.

FAQs

Meningitis ACWY vaccine FAQs.

Is the meningitis ACWY vaccine compulsory for Hajj and Umrah?
Yes. Saudi Arabia requires all pilgrims aged one year and over, and seasonal workers in Hajj areas, to show proof of meningitis ACWY vaccination given at least 10 days before arrival. Without a valid certificate, entry may be refused.
How long is the vaccine valid for entry purposes?
The conjugate ACWY vaccine is generally considered valid for up to 5 years. If the vaccine type is not clearly recorded on your certificate, it may only be accepted as valid for 3 years, so keeping a clear record matters.
Do I need this vaccine for destinations other than Saudi Arabia?
It is commonly recommended for travel to parts of Sub-Saharan Africa’s meningitis belt, particularly during the dry season from December to June, and for anyone attending other large, crowded gatherings.
How many doses do I need?
A single injection. Protection begins to develop within around 2 weeks, which is part of why the 10-day pre-arrival rule exists for entry to Saudi Arabia.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes. You will receive a signed, dated record showing the vaccine name and type given, in the format expected at Saudi Arabia border checks.
Are there any side effects?
Most side effects are mild and settle quickly. These can include soreness at the injection site, a mild, short-lived fever, or feeling tired. Your pharmacist will discuss any individual risks with you before vaccination.
Can I have this vaccine alongside other travel vaccines?
In most cases, yes. It can usually be given in the same appointment as other travel vaccines, such as those needed for a wider trip itinerary alongside Hajj or Umrah. Your pharmacist will confirm the most suitable approach.
