About MMR

Three infections, worth checking your protection against.

Measles is highly infectious and can lead to serious complications including pneumonia and encephalitis. Mumps typically causes painful swelling of the glands and can occasionally affect fertility in men. Rubella is usually mild, but catching it during pregnancy can cause serious harm to an unborn baby. Two doses of the MMR vaccine give strong, long-lasting protection against all three.

Genuinely uncertain of your vaccination history? Many adults born between the 1970s and 1990s have incomplete or unclear records, particularly around mumps protection, since MMR wasn’t introduced until 1988. It’s not harmful to have the vaccine again if your history is unclear, there’s no need to test first unless you’d prefer to.

This is a live vaccine, not suitable during pregnancy. If you’re planning a pregnancy and unsure of your rubella immunity, have this vaccine first and wait at least 1 month before trying to conceive.
A gelatine-free option is available. If this matters to you for personal or religious reasons, let your pharmacist know and this can be used instead.
Who should consider it

Is the MMR vaccine right for you?

Uncertain or incomplete vaccination history

Particularly common in adults born before the late 1990s, or with records that have been lost over time.

Starting university or moving into shared accommodation

Measles and mumps outbreaks are more likely to spread in these settings.

Healthcare and childcare workers

Close contact with patients or young children makes confirming your immunity particularly worthwhile.

Planning a pregnancy

Confirming rubella immunity before conceiving is far preferable to managing exposure during pregnancy.

Travellers needing proof of immunity

Some countries or institutions ask for evidence of measles immunity, which we can help arrange promptly.

Dosing schedule

How the MMR vaccine course works.

First dose

A single injection, given into the upper arm.

Second dose, at least 28 days later

Both doses are needed for the strongest protection, particularly against mumps.

If you’ve had one dose before

Only the second dose may be needed, as long as it’s been at least 28 days since the first. Your pharmacist will confirm based on your history.

Long-lasting protection

Two doses provide strong, generally lifelong protection against measles and rubella. Mumps protection is slightly less robust and can reduce over time, though vaccinated people who do catch mumps usually have a much milder illness.

FAQs

MMR vaccine FAQs.

Isn’t this free on the NHS?
Yes, catch-up MMR doses are available free through your GP practice at any age. Our private service is simply an alternative for anyone who’d rather not wait for a GP appointment, needs proof of vaccination quickly, or prefers the convenience of booking directly with us.
I’m not sure if I’ve had both doses, what should I do?
It’s not harmful to have the vaccine again if your history is unclear, there’s no need to test your immunity first unless you’d prefer to. Your pharmacist can talk through your situation and advise on the best approach.
How many doses do I need?
Two doses, given at least 28 days apart, for the strongest protection. If you’ve already had one dose, only the second may be needed.
Can I have this if I’m pregnant?
No, this is a live vaccine and isn’t suitable during pregnancy. If you’re planning a pregnancy and unsure of your rubella immunity, have the vaccine beforehand and wait at least 1 month before trying to conceive.
Is there a gelatine-free option?
Yes. If avoiding gelatine matters to you for personal or religious reasons, let your pharmacist know and this option can be used.
Are there any side effects?
Most side effects are mild, such as soreness at the injection site. Some people feel slightly unwell or develop a mild, short-lived fever a week or so after vaccination. Your pharmacist will discuss any individual risks with you before vaccination.
My employer needs proof of MMR immunity, can you help with this?
Yes. This is common for healthcare, laboratory and childcare roles. If you have two documented doses already, we can confirm this is sufficient. If your records are unclear, we can either vaccinate you directly or arrange a blood test to check your immunity, whichever your employer requires, and provide a record you can pass on to your occupational health team.
