Typhoid is a serious bacterial infection caught through contaminated food and water, and it remains a real risk for travellers to South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and parts of Central and South America. One injection gives around 3 years of protection. Available as a walk-in appointment with our GPhC-registered pharmacist, no GP referral needed.
What typhoid is, and how the vaccine helps.
Typhoid fever is caused by a bacterium called Salmonella typhi, spread through food or water contaminated by an infected person’s waste. It is most common in areas with poor sanitation, particularly the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka), Sub-Saharan Africa, and parts of Central and South America and the Middle East. Symptoms can include a high fever, headache, stomach pain and either constipation or diarrhoea, and without treatment the illness can become serious.
The typhoid vaccine we offer is a single injection, given into the upper arm. It is not a live vaccine. No vaccine gives complete protection, so good food and water hygiene remains important even after vaccination, particularly drinking only bottled or boiled water and being cautious with street food.
Is the typhoid vaccine right for you?
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka carry the highest typhoid risk, especially for those visiting friends and relatives.
These regions carry an intermediate level of risk, particularly outside major tourist areas.
Those staying with local communities or eating street food are at greater risk than those on shorter, resort-based trips.
If you travel regularly to a typhoid risk area, a booster is generally recommended around every 3 years.
Both are food and water-borne risks for the same destinations, so many travellers have them at the same appointment.

How your typhoid vaccination works.
Single injection
One dose, ideally given at least 2 weeks before you travel, so your body has time to build protection.
Protection develops within around 2 weeks
Most people are well protected by the time this window has passed, though even a dose closer to travel can still offer some benefit.
Around 3 years of protection
A single dose is generally expected to protect for approximately 3 years.
Booster for repeat travel
If you continue to travel to typhoid risk areas, a booster dose is generally recommended around every 3 years. Your Halaxy record helps us track when this is due.
