About B12 deficiency

Why B12 matters, and why confirming the cause matters too.

Vitamin B12 plays a key role in making red blood cells, supporting the nervous system, and helping the body produce energy from food. Low levels can cause tiredness, weakness, pins and needles, memory problems, and in some cases anaemia. Some people are at higher risk of deficiency, including those following a vegan or strictly plant-based diet, older adults, people with certain digestive conditions or previous stomach surgery, and those taking medications such as metformin or long-term antacid treatments.

If you haven’t had your B12 levels checked and aren’t sure whether you’re genuinely deficient, a blood test is a sensible first step, since ongoing tiredness can have many other causes. Your pharmacist can talk through whether testing first makes sense for you, or whether proceeding directly with an injection is appropriate given your history and risk factors.

Persistent, unexplained symptoms deserve a proper diagnosis. If your deficiency turns out to be caused by an underlying condition such as pernicious anaemia, this needs its own diagnosis and ongoing management, not just repeated injections. Your pharmacist will flag this if it seems relevant and can guide you on next steps.
Quick and straightforward. The injection itself takes only a few minutes, with no need to wait around afterwards in most cases.
Who this is for

Is a B12 injection right for you?

Confirmed B12 deficiency

If a blood test has already shown low B12, injections are a well-established way to restore levels.

Vegans and strict vegetarians

B12 is naturally found mainly in animal products, so plant-based diets carry a higher risk of low intake.

Those with absorption difficulties

Including certain digestive conditions, previous stomach or bowel surgery, or long-term use of medications that can reduce absorption.

Older adults

Absorption naturally becomes less efficient with age, making deficiency more common later in life.

Unsure if you’re deficient?

A blood test can confirm this first. Ask your pharmacist about testing options.

FAQs

Vitamin B12 injection FAQs.

Do I need a blood test before having a B12 injection?
Not always, but it’s a sensible first step if you’re not sure whether you’re genuinely deficient, since tiredness can have many other causes. Your pharmacist can advise on whether testing first makes sense for you.
How often will I need repeat injections?
This depends on the cause and severity of your deficiency. Your pharmacist will advise on a suitable schedule, typically every few months for an established, ongoing deficiency.
Can vegans have B12 injections?
Yes. Since B12 is naturally found mainly in animal products, plant-based diets carry a higher risk of low intake, and injections are a straightforward way to top up levels.
What if my deficiency keeps coming back?
Recurrent deficiency can sometimes be caused by an underlying condition, such as pernicious anaemia, which needs its own diagnosis and ongoing management. Your pharmacist will flag this if it seems relevant and can guide you on next steps.
Are there any side effects?
Most side effects are mild, such as soreness at the injection site. Serious reactions are rare. Your pharmacist will discuss any individual risks with you before your injection.
