Vitamin d deficiency signs testing treatment

Tired all the time, aching bones, or catching every cold going round? Low Vitamin D is one of the most common, and most overlooked, causes. It is especially common in the UK, where weaker winter sunlight means many of us do not make enough of it through our skin alone. Here is how to know if you are affected, and what to do about it.
Why Vitamin D matters
Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and phosphate, which keeps bones, teeth, and muscles strong. It also plays a role in supporting normal immune function. Most of our Vitamin D is made in the skin through sunlight exposure, with only a small amount coming from food, so levels naturally dip over autumn and winter for almost everyone in the UK.
Signs of Vitamin D deficiency
Deficiency can be subtle, and many people put the symptoms down to just being run down. Common signs include:
Some people are at higher risk of deficiency, including those with darker skin, anyone who covers most of their skin for cultural or religious reasons, people who spend most of their time indoors, and older adults. If any of this sounds like you, testing gives a clear answer rather than a guess.
Testing your Vitamin D level
A simple blood test measures the amount of Vitamin D circulating in your blood. At Veritas Pharmacy, this is available as a rapid test, with a result in around 10 to 15 minutes, reviewed by a GPhC-registered clinician before you leave. There is no need to fast beforehand.
Your result will fall into one of three broad categories: sufficient, insufficient, or deficient. Your clinician will explain exactly what your number means and whether treatment is likely to help.
Treating low Vitamin D
Treatment usually involves a course of Vitamin D, either as tablets or as an injection, depending on how low your level is and what suits you best. Injections can be a convenient option if you struggle to remember daily tablets, or if a higher, more immediate correction is clinically appropriate.
Most people notice an improvement in energy and general wellbeing within a few weeks of starting treatment, though how quickly levels normalise varies from person to person.
