What is a genotype test, and why get one?
Haemoglobin is the part of your blood that carries oxygen around your body. Most people carry a type called haemoglobin A, while some people also carry other types, such as haemoglobin S or haemoglobin C. A genotype test, also called haemoglobin electrophoresis, looks closely at your blood to find out exactly which types you have.
Many people, especially within West African and Caribbean communities, choose to have this test before starting a family. Checking genotype compatibility with a partner beforehand is a well established and important practice for many couples.

What your result might show.
Genotype results are usually written as a pair of letters. Here are some of the most common ones.
The most common result. This means you carry only the usual type of haemoglobin.
Often called being a carrier, or having sickle cell trait. Most people with this result have no symptoms.
Linked to sickle cell disease. Your clinician will explain what this means and the support available.
A combination your clinician can explain further, alongside its implications.
Generally known as being a carrier of haemoglobin C.
