Northern Nigeria also sits within the African meningitis belt, so meningitis ACWY protection is commonly recommended. What you need before you travel to Nigeria.
Nigeria requires proof of Yellow Fever vaccination from travellers entering or leaving the country, under International Health Regulations. This proof comes in the form of an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis, known as the ICVP or yellow card. The certificate only becomes valid 10 days after your vaccination, so this appointment should not be left until the last minute where possible. Infants under 9 months and adults over 60 are generally exempt from the entry requirement, though vaccination may still be recommended for personal protection depending on your itinerary.
Malaria is present across all of Nigeria throughout the year, and risk is classed as high. There is no vaccine against malaria, so antimalarial tablets are the main way to protect yourself. Northern Nigeria also lies within Africa’s meningitis belt, where outbreaks of meningitis occur more often during the dry season from December to June, making meningitis ACWY vaccination commonly recommended. Typhoid and hepatitis A are also frequently advised for travel to Nigeria.

Ideally 6–8 weeks before you travel, so any vaccines needing more than one dose have time to work. If your trip is sooner, contact us. Yellow Fever and most single-dose vaccines can often still be arranged in time.

Your pharmacist reviews your itinerary, which regions you will visit, the time of year you are travelling, your health history and current vaccination status to identify what you need.
Vaccinations and antimalarial prescription
Any recommended vaccines available on the day are administered at the appointment. Antimalarial tablets are prescribed if suitable for you.
ICVP certificate and documentation
Your Yellow Fever ICVP certificate is issued on the day, and your vaccination record is kept on file in your Halaxy account for future reference.
