HPV vaccine.
The HPV vaccine protects against several strains of human papillomavirus responsible for the majority of HPV-related cancers and genital warts. If you missed it at school, are outside current NHS age eligibility, or simply want protection later in life, it’s available privately for adults of any gender. Why protection matters at any age.
Human papillomavirus, or HPV, is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK, spread through skin-to-skin contact. Most infections clear on their own, but persistent infection with certain high-risk strains can lead to cervical, anal, penile, and some head and neck cancers, as well as genital warts. The vaccine protects against nine of the HPV types responsible for the large majority of these cancers and most genital wart cases.
The NHS offers this vaccine free to school-aged children, with catch-up available up to someone’s 25th birthday, and to men who have sex with men up to age 45 through sexual health clinics. Outside these groups, including most adults over 25, private vaccination is the main route. Because most people haven’t been exposed to all nine strains covered, vaccination can still meaningfully reduce future cancer risk, even for those who are sexually active or have had previous partners.
Is the HPV vaccine right for you?
If you’re over 25, or otherwise outside the NHS catch-up window, private vaccination is available.
The NHS programme for boys only began in 2019, so most adult men in the UK were never offered it.
Protection against strains you haven’t yet encountered remains worthwhile, whatever your relationship history.
Where HPV clearance may be less reliable, follow a modified 3-dose schedule over 12 months.
Where HPV prevalence may be higher and personal protection is a sensible addition.

How the HPV vaccine course works.
First dose
A single injection, given into the upper arm.
Second dose, 1 to 2 months later
For adults aged 15 and over, the standard licensed course is 3 doses in total.
Third dose, 6 months after the first
This completes the course. People with a weakened immune system follow a 3-dose schedule spread over 12 months instead. Your pharmacist will confirm the right schedule for you.
Long-lasting protection
Long-term studies show protection lasting at least 10 years with no signs of waning, and it’s expected to last considerably longer. No booster is currently recommended after completing the course.
