South Africa is malaria-free across most of the country, including Cape Town, the Garden Route and the Winelands, with risk concentrated in game reserves in the northeast, including Kruger National Park. What you need before you travel to South Africa.
There is no yellow fever risk within South Africa itself, and no vaccine required for direct travel from the UK. A certificate is only required if you’re arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, which is worth checking if your trip combines South Africa with other African countries.
Malaria risk is concentrated in the northeastern parts of the country, including Kruger National Park and surrounding game reserves, and parts of Mpumalanga, Limpopo and northern KwaZulu-Natal. There’s no risk in Cape Town, the Garden Route, Johannesburg, or the Winelands. Hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended for most travellers due to food and water hygiene.
