Why we test before treating.
Vitamin D supports bone and muscle health and plays a role in immune function. Most of our supply comes from sunlight on skin, so levels commonly drop over autumn and winter, and deficiency is especially common in people with darker skin, those who cover most of their skin, older adults, people who are housebound, and those with certain digestive conditions affecting absorption. Symptoms can include tiredness, bone or muscle pain, and general low mood.
Because these symptoms overlap with many other causes, and because the right treatment depends on how low your level actually is, this is offered as a test and treat service. Your Vitamin D level is checked, and your pharmacist then recommends the most appropriate treatment, tablets for milder deficiency, or an injection where a faster or more reliable correction is needed, based on your result.
