HbA1c gives a picture of your average blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months, making it a reliable way to screen for diabetes, check for prediabetes, or monitor how well a diagnosed condition is being managed. Choose our rapid capillary test, with a result in around 15 minutes, or our full laboratory test, sent away for a result in 24 to 48 hours.
A 2–3 month average, not just a single snapshot.
Unlike a standard finger-prick glucose reading, which only shows your blood sugar at that exact moment, HbA1c measures how much sugar has attached to your red blood cells over the past 2 to 3 months. Because red blood cells last around this long, HbA1c gives a much steadier, more representative picture of your average blood sugar control than a single glucose reading can.
This makes it a standard way to screen for type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, and to monitor blood sugar control in people already diagnosed. No fasting is required beforehand, for either testing option.
Two ways to have this test done are available. Our rapid test uses a small capillary sample, analysed onsite, with a result explained in around 15 minutes. Our full laboratory test uses a venous blood sample, sent away to a laboratory, with a result available in 24 to 48 hours. Both measure HbA1c only, choose whichever suits your timeline.
