A screening tool, not a diagnosis.
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the prostate gland. This test measures total PSA, free PSA, and the ratio between them, since looking at the balance between these can give a fuller picture than total PSA alone.
It is important to understand that PSA is not a diagnostic test on its own. Levels can be raised for reasons unrelated to cancer, including infection, recent ejaculation, vigorous exercise, or simply increasing age, and a normal result does not completely rule out a problem. Your pharmacist will explain your result in context and advise on appropriate next steps.
