C-reactive protein (CRP) rises when there is inflammation or infection somewhere in the body. This test gives a quick, general marker of what is going on, useful alongside your symptoms rather than as a diagnosis on its own. A small capillary sample, results in around 15 minutes.
A general marker, not a specific diagnosis.
C-reactive protein is made by the liver in response to inflammation anywhere in the body, whether that is from an infection, an injury, a flare-up of a long-term condition, or something else entirely. A raised CRP tells you that inflammation is present, but it does not say where, or why, on its own.
This makes CRP a useful general screening tool, often used alongside your symptoms and other tests to build a fuller picture, rather than as a standalone diagnostic answer. If you are specifically interested in cardiovascular risk rather than general inflammation, our more sensitive hs-CRP test is designed for that purpose instead.
