Rheumatoid factor (RF) is an antibody that is often, though not always, raised in people with rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition that causes joint pain, swelling and stiffness, typically affecting both sides of the body symmetrically. This test measures the level of that antibody in your blood.
It is important to understand that RF alone does not diagnose rheumatoid arthritis. Some people with the condition test negative, while some healthy people, and people with other conditions entirely, can test positive. This test is most useful as one part of a wider clinical picture, alongside your symptoms and a doctor’s assessment, not as a standalone yes-or-no diagnosis.
