A comprehensive cholesterol check covering 7 parameters, including total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides, giving a fuller picture of your cardiovascular risk than a single cholesterol number.

GPhC Registered 9012617 £39 7 parameters, including HDL and LDL Clinician-reviewed result
About this test

More than one number.

A lipid profile measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol (often called the protective type), LDL cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, the ratio between total cholesterol and HDL, and HDL as a percentage of total cholesterol. Together, these give a fuller picture of your cardiovascular risk than total cholesterol alone.

Markers included: total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, HDL percentage, non-HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol to HDL ratio, triglycerides.

This test is one of the most useful checks for assessing your long-term risk of heart disease and stroke, and is often repeated periodically to monitor changes over time or the effect of lifestyle changes or medication.

Fasting may improve accuracy. Some results, particularly triglycerides, can be affected by recent food intake. Your pharmacist will confirm whether fasting is recommended when you book.
Your result includes a clinician commentary. A clinician reviews your result and provides written context before it is sent to you.

FAQs

Lipid Profile FAQs.

Do I need to fast before this test?
It can improve accuracy, particularly for triglycerides. Your pharmacist will confirm whether fasting is recommended for your situation when you book.
What is the difference between HDL and LDL?
HDL is often described as protective, since it helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream, while higher LDL is generally associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Your pharmacist will explain what your specific balance means for you.
How often should I have this test?
This depends on your individual risk factors and whether you are on cholesterol medication. Your pharmacist can advise on a sensible frequency for you.
