What you need before you travel to Tanzania.
Tanzania carries only low potential for yellow fever exposure and isn’t on the WHO’s list of endemic countries, so a certificate isn’t required for direct travel from the UK. It is required if you’re arriving from, or have transited more than 12 hours through, a country with yellow fever risk, which matters if you’re combining this trip with Kenya, Uganda or Rwanda. Note that travellers aged 60 and over should discuss the yellow fever vaccine carefully with their pharmacist, as there is a higher risk of serious side effects in this age group.
Malaria risk is high throughout Tanzania below 1,800m, which includes the classic northern safari circuit (Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara) and Zanzibar. Although Zanzibar has driven transmission down significantly, health authorities still recommend antimalarial tablets there, since transmission hasn’t stopped entirely. Hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended for most travellers due to food and water hygiene.
