Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne illness causing fever and often severe, long-lasting joint pain. Two different vaccine types are available in the UK, with different safety profiles and eligibility rules, so which one is right for you depends on your age and medical history. Chikungunya is spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes across subtropical and tropical parts of the Americas, Africa, Southeast Asia, India and the Pacific region. It is rarely fatal, but the joint pain it causes can be severe and, for some people, lasts for months or even years after the initial illness has passed.
Two vaccine types are currently available in the UK. One is a live vaccine, containing a weakened form of the virus, given as a single dose. Following a UK safety review, this option is no longer recommended for anyone aged 60 or over, or for people with hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or a weakened immune system, due to very rare but serious and occasionally fatal reactions reported in these groups. It also needs to be given no later than 30 days before travel. The other option is a non-live vaccine, based on virus-like particles rather than a weakened live virus, also given as a single dose, suitable from age 12 with no equivalent age or health restrictions and no safety signal to date. Your pharmacist will confirm which option, if either, is appropriate for you.

Single injection
Whichever type applies to you, it’s given as one dose. If the live vaccine type is used, this must be given no later than 30 days before you travel.
Full protection develops within a few weeks
Timing varies by vaccine type, your pharmacist will confirm what to expect and when you’ll be protected for your trip.
Longer-term protection still being studied
Both vaccine types are relatively new, so long-term protection data and any future booster recommendations will be updated as they become available.
