About trichology

Understanding your hair and scalp.

Trichology is the study and care of the hair and scalp. Hair loss and thinning can happen for many reasons, including pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium (a temporary shedding often triggered by stress, illness, or a big change in the body), low iron stores, thyroid problems, and some nutritional deficiencies. Working out which of these applies to you usually starts with a detailed conversation and a close look at your scalp and hair, sometimes supported by blood tests.

At your consultation, your pharmacist independent prescriber will ask about the pattern and timing of your hair loss, your general health, medication, diet, and family history. Where it would help, they can arrange blood tests to check for common contributing factors, and discuss suitable next steps with you.

Some presentations need specialist referral. Sudden patchy bald patches, scarring of the scalp, signs of scalp infection, or hair loss alongside other new symptoms are not managed privately at this clinic. These are referred to your GP or a dermatologist for further assessment.

FAQs

Trichology FAQs.

What happens at a trichology consultation?
Your pharmacist takes a detailed history of your hair and scalp concern, including timing, pattern, general health, medication, and family history, then examines your scalp. Based on this, they may recommend blood tests and discuss suitable next steps with you.
Will I definitely need blood tests?
Not necessarily. Blood tests are recommended where they’re likely to help identify a contributing cause, such as low iron stores or a thyroid problem. Your pharmacist will explain why a test is being suggested and what it looks for.
Which blood tests are commonly used in hair loss assessment?
Our dedicated Male Hair Loss Blood Test and Female Hair Loss Blood Test are the panels most commonly used, since they cover iron, thyroid, and androgen markers alongside wider general health checks in a single sample. Your pharmacist will confirm which, if any, is relevant to you.
Do you treat all types of hair loss?
No. Gradual thinning and pattern hair loss are well suited to this consultation. Sudden patchy bald patches, scarring of the scalp, or signs of scalp infection need specialist assessment, and your pharmacist will refer you to your GP or a dermatologist in these cases.
Do I need a GP referral?
No, you can book directly with our pharmacist independent prescriber without a GP referral.
Is this available on the NHS?
No, this is a private consultation. If your assessment suggests a condition that needs NHS dermatology input, your pharmacist can advise you on seeing your GP.
