Booking flights is the easy part. Working out which vaccines you actually need, and when to have them, is where most people get stuck. This guide explains how travel vaccine decisions are made, why timing matters more than people expect, and what to do if your trip is coming up fast.

Why travel vaccines are not one-size-fits-all

The vaccines you need depend on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and your own health and vaccination history. Someone backpacking through rural areas for a month needs a different risk assessment to someone on a week-long resort holiday, even in the same country. That is why a proper travel health consultation looks at your specific itinerary rather than applying a blanket list for a country or region.

Why timing matters more than people think

Many travel vaccines need time to become fully effective, and some require more than one dose spaced weeks apart. Others have specific rules about how close to travel they can be given. Booking your travel consultation as early as possible, ideally 6 to 8 weeks before you fly, gives the most flexibility.

Travelling sooner than that? It is still worth booking. Many vaccines can be given closer to departure, and some protection is generally better than none. Your pharmacist will explain what is realistically achievable in the time you have left.

Commonly needed travel vaccines

Depending on your destination, vaccines commonly considered include Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis, Cholera, and Meningitis ACWY. Malaria prevention tablets may also be recommended for certain destinations, alongside advice on bite avoidance and other precautions.

Not every vaccine applies to every trip. Yellow Fever, for example, is only relevant for specific countries and is sometimes a legal entry requirement rather than just a health recommendation, which is why an accurate itinerary matters when planning.

What your travel health consultation covers

A travel health consultation reviews your destinations, trip length, planned activities, any pre-existing health conditions, and your vaccination history. From there, your clinician recommends which vaccines and preventative measures are relevant, discusses any risks specific to your trip, and can administer vaccines during the same appointment where appropriate.

There is no separate consultation fee. The prices shown for each vaccine cover the vaccine itself, including the appointment.

What to pack in your travel health kit

Alongside vaccinations, it is worth packing a basic health kit for most trips: any regular medication with some spare in case of delays, rehydration sachets, insect repellent appropriate for your destination, plasters and antiseptic, and any specific items your clinician recommends based on your itinerary, such as malaria tablets or altitude sickness medication.

Travel vaccination FAQs

How far in advance should I book my travel vaccines?
Ideally 6 to 8 weeks before you travel, since some vaccines need multiple doses spaced apart to be fully effective. If you are travelling sooner, it is still worth booking, as your clinician can advise what is achievable in the time available.
Do I need a Yellow Fever vaccine for my trip?
This depends entirely on your destination. Some countries require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination for entry, while others do not require it at all. Your clinician will confirm what applies to your specific itinerary.
Is there a separate consultation fee for travel vaccinations?
No. The price shown for each vaccine covers the full appointment, including the consultation, with no separate consultation charge.
Do I need malaria tablets for my trip?
This depends on your destination and itinerary. Malaria risk varies significantly even within the same country, so your clinician will assess your specific travel plans before recommending tablets.
Can I get all my travel vaccines in one appointment?
Often yes, though this depends on which vaccines you need and any spacing requirements between certain doses. Your clinician will plan the most efficient schedule for your travel date.
