Menopause Blood Tests

Women’s health

Written by the Veritas Pharmacy clinical team · 113 Chester Road, Sunderland · GPhC Registered 9012617

Menopause and perimenopause bring a wide range of symptoms, and blood tests can help in some situations, though not always in the way people expect. This guide explains what our panel checks, and honestly, when testing actually helps and when it might not be the most useful next step.

Quick navigation

“I think I am going through perimenopause. Do I actually need a blood test to confirm it?”

Not always, and it is worth knowing that upfront. For many women over 45 with typical symptoms, menopause is usually recognised from symptoms alone, without needing a blood test at all. Testing is more useful in certain situations, which this guide explains.

Veritas Clinical Insight

Hormone levels naturally fluctuate during perimenopause, sometimes quite a lot from week to week, so a single blood test does not always give a clear answer on its own. This is exactly why your clinician looks at your test alongside your symptoms and age, rather than using a blood test as the only way to confirm what is happening.

Hot flushes Night sweats Irregular periods Mood changes Sleep disturbance Brain fog or poor concentration Vaginal dryness Reduced interest in sex
Myth vs Fact
Myth:

A blood test is always needed to confirm menopause.

Fact:

For women over 45 with typical symptoms, menopause is usually recognised from symptoms and age alone. Blood tests are more useful in specific situations, such as younger women, or where symptoms are unclear.

When testing helps

Are you under 45, or experiencing symptoms that feel unusual or unclear?
Yes

A blood test is often genuinely useful here, to help clarify what is happening and rule out other causes.

Typical symptoms, over 45

Testing may still offer reassurance or a clearer picture, but symptoms and age alone are often enough to recognise what is happening.

What the panel checks

Our Menopause Panel measures oestradiol, LH, FSH, testosterone, and thyroid function together. Checking thyroid function alongside the hormonal markers matters because an underactive thyroid can cause symptoms that overlap closely with perimenopause, so ruling it in or out helps your clinician interpret your other results accurately.

Did You Know?

Because hormone levels can change substantially through the course of perimenopause, your clinician may suggest repeating a test at a later date if your first result is unclear, rather than relying on a single reading.

What happens at your appointment?

Your clinician begins with a conversation about your symptoms, cycle, and general health history. A straightforward blood sample is then taken, in the same gentle way as any other blood test, and sent for laboratory analysis.

Understanding your results

Your clinician interprets your results alongside your symptoms and age, rather than as a number on its own. If your result is unclear, or does not fully explain your symptoms, your clinician can advise on sensible next steps, including whether repeating the test later would be helpful.

Questions We Hear Every Week

Do I need to test on a specific day of my cycle?

This can matter depending on your situation. Your clinician will advise on timing when you book, particularly if your periods are still relatively regular.

Can this panel tell me exactly when menopause will happen?

No test can predict this precisely. The panel helps build a picture of what is happening now, rather than forecasting the future.

What if my results come back normal but I still have symptoms?

This does not mean your symptoms are not real. Your clinician will talk through your full picture and advise on appropriate next steps.
