What is yellow fever?

Yellow fever is a serious viral disease spread by infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. It is endemic in tropical regions of sub-Saharan Africa, South America, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean. The mosquito bites primarily during daylight hours, and the disease does not spread from person to person through direct contact.

Who is at risk? Travellers to affected regions in Africa and South America are at risk, even with brief visits. Many countries with yellow fever risk require proof of vaccination for entry.

Initial symptoms (develop 3–6 days after an infected mosquito bite)

  • High temperature (fever)
  • Severe headache
  • Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite
  • Muscle pain and backache
  • Sensitivity to light

Serious complications (up to 25% of cases)

  • Jaundice — yellowing of the skin and eyes
  • Bleeding from the mouth, nose, eyes or ears
  • Vomiting blood or blood in the stool
  • Organ failure in severe cases

If you are in or returning from a region with yellow fever risk and develop symptoms, seek urgent medical attention or contact NHS 111.

Who needs the yellow fever vaccine?

The yellow fever vaccine is recommended — and in many cases legally required — for travellers visiting affected countries. It is administered as a single dose and provides lifelong protection for most adults.

  • Travellers to sub-Saharan Africa (including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Cameroon)
  • Travellers to tropical South America (including Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia)
  • Travellers to Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, and Central American risk areas
  • Anyone transiting through a country with a yellow fever entry requirement
  • Healthcare or aid workers deploying to at-risk regions
Important: The ICVP certificate only becomes valid for international travel 10 days after vaccination. Book your appointment early enough to meet your travel date. Check fitfortravel.nhs.uk or travelhealthpro.org.uk for current country requirements.

Yellow fever certificate (ICVP)

Many countries require travellers to present a valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) — sometimes called the yellow card — as a condition of entry. This certificate can only be issued by an officially designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre.

Veritas Pharmacy is an officially designated YFVC. When you receive your yellow fever vaccination with us, we issue your ICVP the same day. Please ensure the personal details you provide us match exactly those on your passport or travel documents.

  • ICVP issued on the day of your vaccination, no additional cost
  • Valid for life — no boosters required (updated guidance from 11 July 2016)
  • Certificate becomes valid for travel entry 10 days after vaccination
  • Only authorised YFVCs can issue legally valid ICVP — we are one

Frequently asked questions

Is Veritas Pharmacy an approved Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre?
Yes. Veritas Pharmacy is an officially designated NaTHNaC Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre (YFVC). This means we are authorised to administer the yellow fever vaccine and issue a valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). Only approved YFVCs can issue a legally recognised yellow card for travel entry.
Is the ICVP (yellow card) included in the £75 price?
Yes. The £75 includes the vaccine, the travel health consultation, and your ICVP. There are no additional charges.
How long does the yellow fever vaccine last?
A single dose of the yellow fever vaccine provides lifelong protection for most people. Since 11 July 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that booster doses are no longer required, and ICVP certificates issued on or after that date are valid for life.
When does my yellow card become valid for travel?
Your ICVP becomes valid for international travel entry 10 days after vaccination. You should book your appointment at least 10 days before your planned departure or before any entry deadline the destination country sets.
Do I need a GP referral to book the yellow fever vaccine?
No. You can book directly with us without a GP referral. Simply book online via our Halaxy system or WhatsApp us. The travel health consultation is included with your vaccine appointment.
Who should not have the yellow fever vaccine?
The yellow fever vaccine is a live vaccine and is not suitable for everyone. It is generally not recommended for: infants under 9 months, those who are pregnant (unless the risk of exposure is high), people with certain immune system conditions, or those with a severe egg allergy. Our pharmacist will assess your suitability during the consultation before administering the vaccine.
Can I get other travel vaccines at the same appointment?
Yes, in most cases. We offer 27 vaccines and where clinically appropriate, multiple vaccines can be given in a single visit. View all travel vaccines or see our full price list.
