Travel Health Vaccination Clinic

Travel Health

Written by the Veritas Pharmacy clinical team. Address: 113 Chester Road, Sunderland. Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council, registration number 9012617.

Every trip abroad carries its own particular health considerations, depending on where you are going, how long you are staying, and what you plan to do while you are there. At Veritas Pharmacy, a single travel health consultation covers all of this: your pharmacist reviews your itinerary, recommends the vaccines and precautions relevant to you, and administers what is needed on the day. There is no charge for the consultation itself, and appointments last between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on your itinerary.

What happens during your travel health consultation?

Your pharmacist reviews your full itinerary, including which countries and regions you are visiting, the time of year you are travelling, how long you are staying, and what you plan to do while you are there, alongside your own health history and current vaccination status. From this, your pharmacist identifies which vaccines and precautions are relevant to your specific trip, rather than offering a general, one-size-fits-all list.

Any recommended vaccines available on the day are administered at the same appointment, and antimalarial tablets are prescribed where appropriate for your destination. Not every vaccine or antimalarial will be suitable for every traveller, and this is confirmed as part of your assessment.

We are an approved Yellow Fever centre

Veritas Pharmacy is an approved Yellow Fever vaccination centre, meaning we can administer the Yellow Fever vaccine and issue your official International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis on the same day, where this is required for your destination. Requirements vary considerably between countries. Nigeria, for example, is classified as having a risk of yellow fever transmission, and requires proof of vaccination from travellers entering the country. Other destinations, such as South Africa and Tanzania, generally only require proof of vaccination if you are arriving from, or have transited through, a country with yellow fever risk, rather than for travellers flying directly from the United Kingdom. Some popular destinations, such as Thailand, do not currently require Yellow Fever vaccination at all for direct travellers from the United Kingdom. Because requirements depend on your exact route as well as your destination, your pharmacist confirms exactly what applies to your own itinerary. You can find destination-specific guidance for a range of countries on our travel vaccinations by destination page.

Vaccines and treatments available

Depending on your itinerary, your consultation may lead to a recommendation for vaccines such as the Yellow Fever vaccine, or, for travellers at ongoing or higher risk of animal contact, a full pre-exposure course of the rabies vaccine. For travellers whose plans involve extended stays, work, or study in countries with a higher incidence of tuberculosis, our BCG vaccine service may also be relevant, following an appropriate risk assessment. Your pharmacist will confirm exactly which of these apply to your own trip.

How to prepare for your appointment

We recommend booking your consultation at least 6 to 8 weeks before travel, where possible, since some vaccines need time to take effect, or require more than one dose spaced apart. If your trip is sooner than this, we can often still help, so please book as soon as you are able rather than waiting.

It is helpful to bring details of your itinerary, including the countries and regions you are visiting and the length of your stay, along with any previous vaccination records you have available.

In-clinic and remote options

Your travel health consultation normally takes place in person at our clinic in Sunderland, since vaccines are administered on the day where appropriate. If you would prefer your initial consultation to take place remotely, this can be arranged, so please specify this in your appointment notes when booking.

How to book your travel health consultation

Booking takes a couple of minutes online, or you can call the clinic directly to speak to someone first. There is no charge for the consultation itself; any cost relates only to the specific vaccines or antimalarials recommended for you.
