Travel vaccinations
for Brazil.

Brazil’s health risks depend heavily on where you’re headed. Rio, São Paulo and the coastal cities carry very different considerations to the Amazon region, where yellow fever and malaria both become relevant. Our GPhC-registered pharmacist provides a full pre-travel health assessment tailored to your route, in a single visit.

Entry requirements and regional risk

What you need before you travel to Brazil.

Yellow fever isn’t required for direct entry from the UK, but it is recommended across most of Brazil, particularly rural, forested and Amazon regions, given ongoing transmission risk. There is no yellow fever risk in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, or the coastal beach resorts most tourists visit, so the vaccine may not be necessary if your trip is confined to these areas. It can be required for entry to some neighbouring South American countries if you’re arriving from Brazil, so check your full itinerary.

Malaria in Brazil is concentrated in the Amazon region, with no risk in Brasília, Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo. Typhoid and hepatitis A are recommended for most travellers due to food and water hygiene, and dengue and chikungunya are both present, though vaccines for these are only recommended for specific groups rather than all travellers.

Amazon travel changes the picture considerably. If your trip includes the Amazon region, yellow fever and malaria both become genuinely relevant, quite different from a Rio or São Paulo city break.
Veritas Pharmacy is an approved Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. We can administer the vaccine and issue your ICVP certificate on the same day as your appointment, subject to clinical assessment.

FAQs

Brazil travel vaccination FAQs.

Do I need the Yellow Fever vaccine for Rio or São Paulo?
Generally not, since there’s no yellow fever risk in these cities. The vaccine becomes relevant if your trip includes rural, forested or Amazon regions.
Is malaria a risk throughout Brazil?
No, it’s concentrated in the Amazon region, with no risk in Brasília, Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo. Your pharmacist will confirm based on your specific route.
Can I get the dengue or chikungunya vaccine for Brazil?
Both diseases are present in Brazil, but current guidance only recommends vaccination for specific groups, such as those with a prior dengue infection, rather than all travellers. Your pharmacist can assess whether either applies to you.
What other vaccines are recommended for Brazil?
Typhoid and hepatitis A are commonly recommended for most travellers. Hepatitis B and rabies may be considered depending on your itinerary and length of stay.
