RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) usually causes a mild cough or cold, but it can lead to serious breathing problems, particularly in older adults and those with certain health conditions. The NHS offers this vaccine to specific eligible groups. If you’re outside those groups but want protection, it’s available privately. GPhC-registered pharmacist, no GP referral needed.
Why the NHS programme is age and risk-based.
Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is a common cause of coughs and colds, and most people catch it several times in their life without serious consequences. In older adults, and those with underlying lung or heart conditions or a weakened immune system, it can lead to pneumonia or bronchiolitis, sometimes requiring hospital treatment.
The NHS currently offers this vaccine to those aged 75 and over, all residents of care homes for older adults regardless of age, pregnant women from 28 weeks, and certain adults aged 65 to 74 with specific chronic conditions or a weakened immune system. If you’re outside these groups but want to reduce your own risk, for example if you’re just under the qualifying age or have a condition not currently included, private vaccination is available.

RSV can make symptoms worse if you have a condition such as COPD, even if you’re outside the current NHS age or risk criteria.
The NHS offers this from 28 weeks, private vaccination can be arranged if you’d prefer an earlier or more convenient appointment.
