Liver Function Test (LFT).

Checks how well your liver is working, using a group of markers rather than a single number. Useful for general health screening, investigating symptoms, or monitoring medication that can affect the liver.

GPhC Registered 9012617 £39 8 markers, including ALT, AST, GGT, ALP Clinician-reviewed result
About this test

Several markers, one clearer picture.

A liver function test measures several substances made or processed by the liver, including proteins, bilirubin, and a group of liver enzymes. Looking at these together gives a fuller picture of liver health than any single marker alone.

Markers included: albumin, total protein, globulin, total bilirubin, alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP).

This test is commonly used for general health screening, investigating symptoms such as fatigue or abdominal discomfort, or monitoring the liver while taking certain medications, including some used for cholesterol or weight management.

Your result includes a clinician commentary. A clinician reviews your result and provides written context before it is sent to you.

FAQs

Liver Function Test FAQs.

Do I need to fast before this test?
Fasting is not usually required, but your pharmacist will confirm this when you book, particularly if you are having other tests at the same time.
What does a raised result mean?
A raised marker can have many causes, including alcohol, certain medications, viral infections, or fatty liver changes, and is not diagnostic on its own. Your pharmacist will explain your result and advise on appropriate next steps.
How often should this be repeated if I am on regular medication?
This depends on the medication and your individual monitoring plan. Your prescriber or pharmacist can advise on a suitable frequency.
