Yellow fever is a serious viral disease spread by infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. It is endemic in tropical regions of sub-Saharan Africa, South America, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean. The mosquito bites primarily during daylight hours, and the disease does not spread from person to person through direct contact.
Initial symptoms (develop 3–6 days after an infected mosquito bite)
- High temperature (fever)
- Severe headache
- Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite
- Muscle pain and backache
- Sensitivity to light
Serious complications (up to 25% of cases)
- Jaundice — yellowing of the skin and eyes
- Bleeding from the mouth, nose, eyes or ears
- Vomiting blood or blood in the stool
- Organ failure in severe cases
If you are in or returning from a region with yellow fever risk and develop symptoms, seek urgent medical attention or contact NHS 111.
Who needs the yellow fever vaccine?
The yellow fever vaccine is recommended — and in many cases legally required — for travellers visiting affected countries. It is administered as a single dose and provides lifelong protection for most adults.
- Travellers to sub-Saharan Africa (including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Cameroon)
- Travellers to tropical South America (including Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia)
- Travellers to Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, and Central American risk areas
- Anyone transiting through a country with a yellow fever entry requirement
- Healthcare or aid workers deploying to at-risk regions
Yellow fever certificate (ICVP)
Many countries require travellers to present a valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) — sometimes called the yellow card — as a condition of entry. This certificate can only be issued by an officially designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre.
Veritas Pharmacy is an officially designated YFVC. When you receive your yellow fever vaccination with us, we issue your ICVP the same day. Please ensure the personal details you provide us match exactly those on your passport or travel documents.
- ICVP issued on the day of your vaccination, no additional cost
- Valid for life — no boosters required (updated guidance from 11 July 2016)
- Certificate becomes valid for travel entry 10 days after vaccination
- Only authorised YFVCs can issue legally valid ICVP — we are one
