Going on a trip abroad is exciting, and getting the right travel vaccinations is an important part of getting ready. This guide explains, in simple terms, why travel vaccines matter, when to book them, and what happens at your appointment.

Why do people need travel vaccinations?

Some places in the world have illnesses that are not common in the United Kingdom. Travel vaccinations help protect your body against these illnesses before you go, so you can enjoy your trip with peace of mind.

When should I book my travel health appointment?

It is best to book your appointment around four to six weeks before you travel. This is because some vaccines need more than one dose, and your body needs time to build up protection. According to travel health guidance from the National Travel Health Network and Centre, booking early gives you the best possible protection for your trip.

Travelling sooner than that? Please still get in touch. Even a short amount of time before your trip is better than none, and our team will do everything possible to help you.

What kinds of travel vaccinations are there?

The vaccinations you may need depend on where you are travelling to, how long you are staying, and what you plan to do while you are there. Common examples include the following categories.

Your clinician will talk through your travel plans with you and recommend which vaccinations are suitable for your specific journey.

What happens at your travel health consultation?

Your appointment starts with a friendly conversation about where you are going, how long you are staying, and what activities you have planned. Your clinician will then explain which vaccinations are recommended for your trip, answer any questions you have, and give any vaccines you need there and then, where possible.

How much does it cost?

Your travel health consultation itself is free of charge. The cost of any vaccines needed depends on which ones are right for your trip.
