Understanding Blood Test Results Sunderland

Blood tests & diagnostics

Written by the Veritas Pharmacy clinical team · 113 Chester Road, Sunderland · GPhC Registered 9012617

A blood test report can look like a wall of unfamiliar terms and numbers. It is easy to feel lost. This guide explains what your results actually mean, how to prepare properly, and what happens after Veritas Pharmacy sends your report.

Why blood tests use reference ranges, not one “correct” number

Every result on your report sits next to a reference range, the band that covers most healthy people. If your result falls inside that range, it is generally considered normal for that marker. If it falls outside, it does not automatically mean something is wrong. It means it is worth understanding why, in the context of your symptoms, your age, and your overall health.

Reference ranges also vary slightly between laboratories, and some markers, like hormones, change naturally depending on the time of day, your menstrual cycle, or recent food and drink. That is why the same test can sometimes give slightly different results on different days, and why a single result is rarely read in isolation.

Rapid tests versus lab-based panels

At Veritas Pharmacy, some tests are processed in-clinic using a point-of-care analyser, with results ready in 10 to 30 minutes. These rapid tests cover common markers such as Vitamin D, blood glucose control (haemoglobin A1c), iron stores (ferritin), inflammation (C-reactive protein), and several hormone markers, each priced from £50.

Other panels are sent to accredited UK laboratories for more detailed analysis, with results typically back within 24 to 72 hours. These cover broader profiles, such as full thyroid function, liver and kidney function, a cholesterol profile, and hormone panels for fertility, menopause, or testosterone. A £35 phlebotomy fee applies per visit for lab-based tests, in addition to the panel price.

How to prepare for your blood test

Preparation depends on what is being tested. Some panels, particularly cholesterol and glucose-related tests, are more accurate after fasting, usually meaning nothing but water for around 10 to 12 hours beforehand. Others, such as Vitamin D or thyroid function, do not need any special preparation at all.

Staying hydrated helps. Drinking water beforehand, unless you have been told to fast completely, makes it easier to find a vein and gives a more comfortable sample collection. Your clinician will confirm exactly what is needed for your specific test when you book.

What happens to your sample, and how you get your results

A trained clinician collects your sample at 113 Chester Road, Sunderland, with most appointments taking 10 to 15 minutes. Rapid tests are processed on-site, and reviewed by a clinician registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council before you leave. Lab-based samples are sent to an accredited laboratory, and your results are sent to you securely by email once a clinician has reviewed them.

If anything in your results needs further discussion, whether that is a mildly abnormal marker or something that needs a referral, your clinician will explain what it means and what the sensible next step is. You are never simply handed a printout and left to interpret it alone.

Blood test FAQs

Do I need to fast before my blood test?
It depends on the test. Cholesterol and some glucose-related panels are usually more accurate after fasting for around 10 to 12 hours. Many other tests, including Vitamin D and thyroid function, need no preparation at all. Your clinician will confirm what is needed for your specific test.
How long do results take?
Rapid tests processed in-clinic are ready in 10 to 30 minutes. Lab-based panels are typically returned within 24 to 72 hours, sent securely to you by email once reviewed by a clinician.
What does it mean if my result is outside the reference range?
It does not automatically mean something is wrong. Reference ranges cover most healthy people, and a result outside that range simply needs interpreting alongside your symptoms and health history, which your clinician will help with.
Do I need a general practitioner referral for a private blood test?
No. Private blood tests at Veritas Pharmacy can be booked directly without a general practitioner referral, and same-day or next-day appointments are usually available.
Is there a fee on top of the test price?
Rapid tests are priced as shown with no additional fee. Lab-based panels carry a £35 phlebotomy fee per visit, in addition to the panel price, which covers sample collection and handling.
